When a system reaches the end of its life we tear it off and install 6-inch seamless aluminum or copper sized for our rainfall, often bundled with a roof replacement to save a mobilization. Aluminum gutters typically last 20 to 30 years here, copper 50 or more.
Do you repair gutters, or only replace them?
We replace and install. We do not take on patch repairs. A patch on a system that is already corroding, sagging, or leaking at multiple seams usually fails again within a season, and the homeowner ends up paying twice. If your gutters are newer and only need a section addressed, we will tell you that when we look at it rather than sell you a full system.

When should you replace gutters instead of repairing them?
Replace when the whole system is at the end of its life rather than one section. The signs are consistent: rust or corrosion along multiple runs, seams leaking in several places, cracks and holes, peeling paint or water stains on the fascia, gutters that sag no matter how often they are rehung, and standing water or soil erosion at the foundation.
There is one more trigger specific to the Lowcountry: 5-inch builder gutters that were never sized for our storms. Those are not failing from age, they are failing from capacity, and no amount of resealing fixes that.
Age alone is not the whole picture either. Neglected cleaning or a poor original install can cut any gutter’s usable life close to in half.
What we see on tear-offs: a lot of the systems we pull are 15 to 20-year-old 5-inch sectional gutters where every joint has been resealed two or three times. Replacing them with 6-inch seamless removes the seams that were failing in the first place.

For a typical Lowcountry home at 150 to 200 linear feet, a full 6-inch seamless aluminum replacement generally lands around $2,100 to $4,800.
The spread is wide because the roof matters more than the gutter. Height, pitch, the number of corners, access for the truck, added downspouts, and fascia that has rotted behind the old gutters all push a job toward the top of the range. Rotted fascia is common on tear-offs, since a failing gutter has usually been dumping water on it for years, and it has to be repaired before new gutters go up.

Should you replace gutters at the same time as your roof?
Usually yes. If the roof is being replaced anyway, doing the gutters in the same project means one crew, one mobilization, and clean flashing-to-gutter integration at the roof edge. It also avoids sending a second crew up later to work around a brand-new roof. If your roof still has years left, gutter replacement stands on its own just fine.

We also upsize downspouts to 3×4 and reposition the drops so they discharge the code-required 5 feet from the foundation, per IRC R801.3. That is a common weak point on older installs, and it is often the actual cause of the crawlspace water people blame on the gutters.
